When considering a change in your professional life, it's important to understand the difference between a job change and a career change. While they may seem similar, they involve different levels of commitment and require different approaches. On the one hand, a career change can be a big decision, but with the proper research, planning, and mindset, you can find a new path that brings you fulfillment and success. On the other hand, your dissatisfaction with your current situation may be solved by changing jobs and finding a new workplace better suited to your strengths, personal values, and career drivers. You need to know your leadership style (Ep 167)
Monday Jan 02, 2023
Monday Jan 02, 2023
Redefining your leadership style post-pandemic is crucial for career success. In this episode, we discuss the vital differences between leaders and why some succeed at developing a high-performing culture and others don't.
In the mid-1990s, Gary was introduced to Servant Leadership and the theory and practice of Organisational Learning. These theories are constantly evolving and have spawned Authentic Leadership and Inclusive Leadership. The theoretical foundation of these bodies of knowledge has continued to influence Gary in everything he does. Most importantly, Gary believes in closing the gap between theory and practice, the space in which he has chosen to work. He focuses on leaders because they have the most significant influence on the culture within an organization.

Some popular career coaching services include resume writing, interview preparation, strengths assessment and analysis, and LinkedIn coaching. As a career coach, I offer all the services above, and they can be booked or purchased straight from my website. However, many professionals are unaware of the benefits of working with a career coach, mainly because when professionals do book coaching services, they don't tend to communicate that to their friends and colleagues. It gives others no clue that they have worked with a coach to achieve their goals. I'd say that 90% of my clients are like that. So let's discuss the benefits and why professionals opt to work with career coaches when they are looking to achieve specific goals with their job hunting or career ambitions.

How to overcome a career setback (Ep 155)
Monday Oct 10, 2022
Monday Oct 10, 2022
Recently, I have been dealing with a personal setback for the past couple of weeks, and of course, my clients have lots of setbacks all the time. Although I often share on social media how excited I am about achievements from my clients when they get a new job or just signed a new contract, that doesn't mean the path to that ultimate goal has been trouble-free.
The story arc from the point when somebody starts working with me to the time they "graduate" with a job is not linear. We learn along the way. We fail along the way. And sometimes, it can be very frustrating.
So how do you overcome it? Listen to this episode, where I will discuss some of my tips and personal stories to help you deal with career setbacks.

How to job-hunt and go back to work after a long break (Ep 154)
Monday Oct 03, 2022
Monday Oct 03, 2022
Many professionals have not looked for a new job in many years. They are either a) in the workforce but have worked for the same organization for a long time, or b) have been on a career break for some time and have not looked for work for over a year. Job hunting and returning to work after a long break can be challenging. In this episode, I provide some out-of-the-box advice to make this process less stressful and, hopefully, more fun.

This month, three coaching clients are starting new jobs. It is such a fantastic feeling for them and me to achieve this much-wanted result. And these are not just any jobs. These are excellent, special opportunities aligned with my clients' career goals and paying well. I like to think I had a hand in helping them. But as my client pool grows, I also have started to notice that some clients are more productive than others. So I started paying attention to common traits my clients have that allow them to move ahead of the game and speed up results in their job searches.
So, here are the 7 traits and strategies that I have identified as successful job hunting strategies when I work with my clients. I hope you enjoy listening to this episode.

Many of us are already used to working from home, and working in a different location wouldn't be much different. I recently traveled overseas and realized that working while traveling allows you to learn more about yourself, your lifestyle, and the people around you. It also improves your communication and organizational skills.
It can be uncomfortable to work outside your home or work office. There can be many unexpected and stressful things that might happen, but it can also be one of the best things you can do in life! So, here are some of my tips if you're planning to travel soon while working or job hunting.

- 4:00 - Create a structure that supports the lifestyle you want.

Why having a niche is important for job hunters (Ep 150)
Monday Sep 05, 2022
Monday Sep 05, 2022
In this episode, I discuss why it’s essential to find your niche and the common misconceptions about niching down that we need to debunk so you can get your next job faster.
If you believe you are a generalist without a specific niche, unique industry expertise, sector expertise, or deep knowledge of a particular area, you're not alone. Many executives believe they are generalists, and they may even announce that on their LinkedIn profiles and resumes, which is a big mistake!
Every recruiter who has been a guest on this podcast de-bunks this myth that it’s better to be a generalist than an expert. Every single one of them has encouraged you, listeners, to find your expertise and flaunt it.
Podcast Episode Timestamps:
- 02:00- The importance of niching down and finding your expertise.
- 08:25 - Niching down means limiting the jobs you can apply for.
- 10:04 - You have to niche down to a specific group of companies or jobs.

You may aim for innovation all you want. Still, you won't get it if you don't start acting differently, structuring your business differently, and being agile to adopt and adapt to change as opportunities and threats come along. This also applies to career advancement and job hunting: you may want it, but to achieve your goal, you will need to adopt and adapt to changes as professional opportunities and threats come along! Can you see the similarities between innovation and career advancement?
Janet Sernack is a consultant and coach who helps other coaches like me, leaders, and organizations to innovate, adapt and grow through disruption. Janet's expertise is in helping her clients understand what it means to be innovative and adaptive to change. In our conversation for this episode of The Job Hunting Podcast, we discuss how job seekers can use innovation concepts to be comfortable with the discomfort of the job search.

Coaching is an excellent investment, but it will only work if you incorporate it into your life. With coaching comes also a new routine to a) sustain your career, b) ensure you progress towards your goals, and c) keep the opportunities coming to you in the long term.
On the other hand, career coaching helps professionals understand how to optimize their time. There's more focus on the tasks needed to be done to enable your career plans. Because job hunting on your own can be really exhausting!
If you don't have a career coach (yet!), fear not! In this episode, I provide four tips so you can find the time, use it well, and incorporate career planning into your routine.
Timestamps:
- 03:13 - Make a date with yourself: once a day, week, quarter - schedule it
- 06:55 - Prepare templates to support your career.
- 08:18 - Test, plan, and prepare: things you can do when you have time and don’t need a job or promotion.
- 11:40- Be in the moment.

In managing the trajectory of your career, one of the most important assets you have is your reputation. What other people think of you as a) a colleague, leader, or team member, and b) your behavior around others, including clients and stakeholders, will impact their ability to consider you for promotions internally, as well as job opportunities in other organizations. In this podcast episode, I discuss a few ideas that I believe you can use to help you showcase your competence, likeability, and credibility as a professional.

How to work online, remain productive, and connect with people (Ep 138)
Monday Jun 13, 2022
Monday Jun 13, 2022
I am always giving my clients tips on how to work online. Here are the key complaints I hear from clients and friends:
- It's hard to connect with people
- It's hard to keep productive
- It's lonely, and
- There's a tendency to work too much
But, working online is now the main aspect of white-collar working life. Many office workers who, pre-pandemic, had to commute to work now can work remotely. Even if they go back to the office, you may find it empty, and most of the work you do is still in front of the computer anyway. So for transitional office-based companies, virtual companies, working for yourself, or job hunting, I hope you will find these tips helpful.
Timestamps:
- 7:43 - Be ruthless with emails
- 12:13 - GIFs and Emojis are fine
- 14:31 - Videos and voice messages are your friend
- 16:18 - Look good on video
- 20:24 - Create fun traditions and opportunities working online
- 21:37 - Have at least two monitors
- 22:33 - Find time during the week to have real coffee with a colleague or a walking meeting.

I get asked a lot by my clients what it's like to work for myself. We also discuss this option when working on the client's future goals and career plans. So, in this episode, I wanted to share with you my experience working for myself since 2019, compared with my previous experience being an employee from 2002 until the end of 2018.
Before 2002, I also had my own business from 1993 until 2000 and took a year to study in 2001. You can learn more about my career story by watching or listening to episode number 62 of the Job Hunting Podcast. I have also recorded an episode on how to transition from a corporate job to being a business owner. But this episode is different: it's a comparison of the two different work types and lifestyles. Also important to note as you listen to this episode is that I am in Australia. So wherever you are in the world, you may need to translate some of these concepts to your local terminology, especially if it has to do with tax benefits.
There are always pros and cons to every path you take in life. It's also important to ensure the decision you take suits you at this specific time of your life. After listening to this episode, you will know that, at times, it was great for me to have my own business, including right now. But there were also times when all I wanted was a permanent job. There is no right or wrong answer, just the correct answer for you.
I hope that you find this episode helpful when trying to plan your next career steps. If you need my support, please don't hesitate to reach out. You can find out more about my services here.

Abhishek Kaushik is the CEO & Co-Founder of WeCP, a one-of-a-kind tech screening platform that helps recruiters and hiring managers to evaluate developers faster and more efficiently.
Abhishek aims to make the hiring process straightforward and efficient by adding a skill test to the tech recruitment process. Abhishek has reduced the total time to hire for most of their clients by 90% or more by implementing these ideas.
In this episode, we chat with Abhishek about:
- The Future of Tech Recruitment: If you have been job hunting recently, you know that you cannot avoid technology anymore in the recruitment process. At every executive and professional level, it's all-encompassing.
- How you can use "First Principles" and creative thinking to help you prepare for job interviews and help solve work problems.
- What the future will look like for recruitment and selection of candidates.
About our guest
In 2015, Abhishek and his co-founder wanted to test an idea that emerged from a random Chai chat in a college cafeteria. They created their first screening platform as the nerds they were, obsessed over coding challenges. By 2018, they had honed in on their product — an award-winning library of questions, compilers, and the ability to hire at scale attracted enterprise names.
Skip forward to today, and WeCP stands as a one-of-its-kind tech screening platform helping recruiters and hiring managers worldwide evaluate developers faster and with utmost efficiency. WeCP has been recognized as the "Top 4 Startup in India" by Startup Nexus, IC^2 in 2017, "Emerging Startups" by K-Startup World Grand Challenge in 2018, and "Top SaaS Startups" by Upekkha Catalyst- in 2019. WeCP is the Momentum Leader and Top Performer in the Technical Skills Screening Software category on G2.

Have you ever thought of having your own podcast? Or have you been invited to be a guest on a podcast?
In this episode, I share everything I have learned while setting up The Job Hunting Podcast. And I discuss it from the perspective of a corporate professional willing to participate in the podcast world, as opposed to a business owner like me.
I have found that more and more corporate professionals are considering using podcasts to amplify their reputation, or alternatively, as an outlet for a hobby completely separate from day-to-day work. Moreover, many professionals are now being asked to be guests on podcasts, so I also discuss what to do if that happens to you. And if you want to be a guest, I give tips on how to approach a podcast host.
I hope you enjoy this interesting topic. I have often suggested hosting a podcast or being a guest to clients who are on career breaks or between jobs. Now I can share my tips and ideas with you.

There are challenges in job hunting. For some professionals, these challenges are enough to make them avoid job hunting altogether. However, there are huge benefits for professionals who embrace the challenge of changing jobs, such as obtaining higher wages and more flexibility.
So, it’s crucial for professionals to move jobs, or at least learn how to move jobs so they can do so confidently when the time is right. In this episode, we look at the five things no one tells you about job hunting so you can prepare for them. If you know what they are, you can plan, address, and conquer the five challenges that may keep you from progressing in your job search and securing the job you want.

It's natural to rethink your career. We're in unprecedented times, causing many of us to review our career paths, consider taking a break or search for new opportunities.
In this episode, we will discuss strategies to increase your employability, even if you decided to take a career break, which many professionals are doing due to pandemic burnout.
When I develop ideas for episodes, I make a few assumptions about my listeners. For example, I assume they are ambitious for their career. Otherwise, why would they be listening to The Job Hunting Podcast!? I assume, of course, that they want a job and want to live their lives with purpose, as opposed to finding whatever job is available. They want to find a job aligned with their values. Leading a purposeful life is a very post-covid sentiment. Everyone wants it.
However, the outcome of two years of working and living under unusual circumstances has taken a toll. Many of us are burnout.
People "feel so apathetic now they're having to deal with the coronavirus and feel exhausted. They literally just want to lie down with a book, or sit and watch some TV, rather than keep the momentum going by working hard," says Kerry Allen, the BBC's China media analyst.
It's normal to want to take a break. Don't be hard on yourself for feeling unmotivated.
In this episode, I will:
- Discuss what's happening with the labor force and why the unemployment rate is so low. It is not because the economy is thriving. It's way more complicated than that.
- Offer you two better ways to assess your chances of getting your next job fast. A clue: it is not the unemployment rate!
- Explain the importance of paying attention to trends and what type of news to consume if you want to advance in your career.

When coaching doesn’t work (Ep 132)
Monday May 02, 2022
Monday May 02, 2022
Engaging a career coach is considered by many professionals a difficult to make. They can't be sure of the results, and the investment is substantial, especially if you're between jobs and not earning a paycheck. It seems counterintuitive to spend money at the precise time when you need to be saving it.
For me, working with a coach was always a no-brainer. I knew what I didn't know, and I was hungry to advance faster in my career. At every opportunity, I signed up, enrolled, and paid for either professional development or career development throughout my corporate career.
Now, I am a coach. I've developed services and coaching programs that I believe are within reach of my target audience: professionals working in the corporate, public, or nonprofit sectors who want to advance in their careers with confidence and knowledge of how promotion and job hunting work.
But working with a coach is not for everyone or every job search. If you’re contemplating signing up with a coach but are unsure if it will work for you, this episode may help you decide.
11 reasons why you don’t need a coach:
In this episode, I will explain each of the reasons below in more detail, so you can decide if coaching will be beneficial for you or you can do without it.
-
You know precisely what you want to do next in your career.
-
You have done many successful job transitions in your career.
-
You have a strong and supportive professional network.
-
Your resume and overall job application are converting to job interviews for the jobs you want.
-
You regularly update your resume, and it is ATS compliant.
-
You’re comfortable on video and have experience in direct-to-camera video interviewing.
-
You are happy where you are, job-wise and career-wise.
-
You have a crisp pitch you’ve worked on and tested successfully.
-
You had job interviews recently and landed jobs that were great for you.
-
You consistently make it to the first and second stages of interviewing and believe it’s just a matter of time before you get an offer.
-
You have been moving up in your career and achieving the goals you set out for yourself.
5 reasons why you need a coach, but it may not work for you. At least not yet:
And here are the reasons why you quite possibly need career coaching, but maybe there are other things you need to sort out first before engaging a coach:
-
You have a very intense job and high responsibilities - including NDAs - and you may only be able to job hunt when you leave your current employment.
-
You can't find the time: You are so busy you have no time to invest in your career.
-
You are having personal problems that affect your ability to commit to coaching and job searching.
-
You may need other types of support mechanisms before engaging in career coaching.
-
You don’t like being coached.

I’ve been thinking of doing an episode about sabbatical for a long time. I tried inviting guests, but no one felt comfortable coming out publicly to talk about their experience. This made me even more interested in the whole concept of what these professionals were calling a sabbatical, what it actually was, and why it's still a taboo to take time off from a long career to do whatever else one wants to do or just recover from being laid off and burned out.
Then, last month LinkedIn changed its profile settings recently to allow professionals to identify a career break during their work experience. And in the past couple of weeks, a few prominent Australians quit their jobs. They informed that they were resigning and planning to go on a career break: The Premier of Tasmania, the CEO of the Australian Football League. And last week, a former guest of The Job Hunting Podcast and the CEO of Koko Black, Nicolas Georges. In his announcement, Peter Gutwein, former Premier of Tasmania, said that there was "nothing left in the tank."
Their message was clear: The past couple of years have taken a toll. Undoubtedly, more professionals are feeling burned out and dreaming about taking a break. So, how can we plan and enjoy a proper sabbatical and still make a triumphant return to work?

Natalie Moore and Lisa Saunders are the ultimate work-wives team. They have a keen interest in women in the workplace, especially when they should be thriving professionally, but peri-menopause can cause havoc to women’s careers. Two brains are better than one, and they decided to go into business together to improve workplace wellbeing.
In this episode, we discuss the importance of goal setting and how it can impact career and personal outcomes. We look at the importance of working as a team to achieve career and personal goals and how their blended strengths align and complement each other for their business to thrive.
We then look at the impact of the two years of the pandemic on our mental and physical health. I’ve called this episode “The Big Burnout” due to many client work this year dedicated to getting professionals out of their funk and back into life and work. So, it was beautiful to reflect on this trend I have noticed anecdotally with two health and wellness experts.
And finally, we then tackle one of my favorite topics: menopause. There is so little research and public knowledge of the impact of hormonal imbalances and career progression. For some women, perimenopause can severely and negatively affect their careers. Lisa and Natalie work with professional women and their workplaces to educate and promote better women’s career advancement policies.
I hope you enjoy this episode. Please connect with me on social media or reply to my newsletter and let me know how this episode helped you or someone you know.

Michael Yingers’s career in supporting the needs of the recruitment and selection function parallels the creation and evolution of the ATS - Applicant Tracking System. So of course, Michael is an amazing repository of knowledge of all things relating to the automation of recruitment and selection of candidates, and in fact both the technological and humanistic side of the entire recruitment and selection process.
If you are interested to know what happens to your job application once you submit it, you have to listen to this episode! Michael explains how resumes are short-listed automatically, as well as how the automation is actually put in place by humans making decisions about specific keywords which may or may not be on your application.
Michael details the things that will compromise your job application being read properly by a machine, making this episode one of the most important conversations I’ve had in a long time for those who are serious about converting from job application to interview.
The message from Michael is clear: If your resume is not written for ATS compliance, you run the risk of it being eliminated from the recruitment process.
As we discussed at the end of this episode, there’s no need for professionals to re-invent the wheel. That is why I created Reset Your Career. It’s a program that is ready for you to use, and has templates and resources to help you update your resume and start your job search with confidence. Click here to learn more and access it now.

Dressing for work post-lockdown is a challenge. There's a lack of motivation and a struggle to get dressed up to go back into the office. People are struggling with changing fashion trends, new office dress codes, and knowing what to dress to work from home. So, I invited an international award-winning personal stylist, Silvana Patrick, for a chat.
Silvana Patrick has the advantage of working globally as an executive before embracing her love for fashion and styling. She knows how corporate attire plays into forming a professional brand and how important it can be in career development, job search specifically.
I always ask my guests to start by telling us a bit about their careers, and it's always great to hear about career changes. Silvana has made two important ones at the beginning, and when she noticed the wind as in her favor later on.
She then explains in a very inclusive and understanding way the importance of caring and dressing for your body shape, not following fashion trends that are not suitable to you, and embracing how you want to dress.
So let's hear my conversation with Silvana, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
About Silvana Patrick
Silvana Patrick is an international, award-winning personal stylist and brand expert whose work translates into powerful results with her clients. Having worked in several countries, she brings a vast understanding and experience in optimizing ones' image in the corporate and professional environment. Silvana uses the power of style to transform our perception of self and others, leaving her client feeling more confident and increasing their presence and impact in all aspects of their professional roles. She is a keynote presenter for several leading organizations and is part of the career and professional development initiatives at the University of Adelaide and Flinders University. Why we make bad career decisions (Ep 126)
Monday Mar 21, 2022
Monday Mar 21, 2022
When it comes to making career decisions, I have noticed that professionals fall into the sunk cost fallacy when they continue a career track event when they are not interested in it anymore. This is especially true when they have already invested years working or studying towards a degree. This behavior happens for many reasons, none of them rational!
Keep listening to learn how Sunk Cost Fallacy can cause you to get stuck in your career. You will also learn 5 strategies you can use to help you make better career decisions to achieve your goals.

[09:00] First thing to consider: Only take future costs into consideration.
[09:54] Second thing to consider: Stop making irrational decisions.

[11:38] Fourth thing to consider: Reflect and review constantly.

It is now easier than ever before to work harder, for longer hours, every day, from anywhere, and at any time. We check our phones constantly. We answer calls when we are driving, walking, cooking. Keeping up with work is a “rat race” and a real trap. We work so hard, and yet we lose focus of our dreams and our values.
It’s too easy to stay locked into hard work mode. Hard work is praised in almost every culture. It is also how we introduce ourselves to others. "How have you been?". "Super busy, working a lot, but fine!" It’s how we start conversations and know we believe that we add value to the world. It’s through hard work.
But is it a solution to your career problems? I don't think it is.
Listen to this episode of The Job Hunting podcast and find out a few of my strategies to get you out of the "rat race" and moving forward in your career.

Overcoming career setbacks: A conversation with Sacha Koffman (Ep 122)
Monday Feb 21, 2022
Monday Feb 21, 2022
I have always been fascinated by professionals that recover from career setbacks and achieve great things. Not just executives but also athletes, artists, politicians, etc. There is a great deal of effort into their recovery, from working on their mental health, remaining on course towards their goals, and ensuring they have the best team to provide the proper support and advice. I often wonder how they found the strength and wisdom to turn things around.
This is why I invited my friend Sacha Koffman to chat with me for this episode. Sacha is an executive with over twenty-five years of commercial experience. He's worked at some of the best-known global consulting firms and corporate brands, always in learning and leadership development roles. More recently, Sacha has also embraced this entrepreneurial side and is the co-founder of two startups that have grown successfully.
Early in his career, Sacha faced enormous challenges. His situation, which he will explain in our interview, made him feel lonely, and it was difficult to talk about it with anyone, let alone open up about it at work. This, in turn, led to further troubles in both his work and personal life.
But this story has a happy ending. And this is why I really wanted to interview Sacha. In this episode of The Job Hunting Podcast, he opens up about these challenges and shares how being authentically vulnerable saved his career and ultimately led him on his crusade to help others navigate life obstacles. It's a long episode, folks, so grab your coffee and your tea because it's 100% worth listening

Today we have a very different episode on The Job Hunting Podcast, where I have swapped chairs with a past guest, Michelle Redfern, from episode 37, and she is the one interviewing me.
Michelle has recently launched her podcast with her business partner Mel Butcher, The Lead to Soar Podcast, and they are killing it. Sticking to their strength in supporting women in leadership, they have lined up a great guest list, so I recommend that you check it out, follow, subscribe, and leave them your support in the form of a 5-star ranking and a great review, because nothing makes a podcast host happier and receiving feedback believe me.
This interview in its entirety is on Michelle's podcast. I have edited her intro out with her blessing, of course, and repurposed it for you to listen to. There are great episodes in her show you should listen to, like the Agile Leader and Giving and Receiving feedback which I think are topics you wouldn't find here on The Job Hunting Podcast. Still, they are such great complimentary conversations to what we discuss in this show, yes? Let's enjoy this episode.
