The podcast with Expert Insights for Navigating the Modern Job Market. Hi, my name is Renata Bernarde. In 2018, I left my job to help others get their careers on track. My love for coaching started at a very young age. Over time, I realized that many professionals don’t know how recruitment & selection work, which negatively impacts their career progression. Today I host The Job Hunting Podcast and I also have a series of career services for corporate professionals. My signature coaching program is called Job Hunting Made Simple, a roadmap teaching professionals the steps and framework to make career advancement simpler and less stressful. Please subscribe, leave me a rating, write a review, and let the people you care about know about this podcast. About our guest, Michele Chevalley Hedge:
Michele Chevalley Hedge was previously a marketing manager, so she truly understands the needs of time-poor corporate executives who, family or not, want health but not hassle. Health magazine editors often introduce her as “the modern-day nutritionist – the one who likes a bit of wine and coffee.” She is not Paleo Pete, or I Quit Sugar but perfectly placed somewhere in the healthy middle.
Michele’s clinical practice and experience allow her to share stories of patients and their nutritional transformation, which give the audience goosebumps – the kinds of stories that can only be heard if you are at the coal face with clients. Women who say their addiction to food caused their divorce; executives who say they don’t like going to the boardroom without her five top tips; and politicians, and their families, who come to her wellness retreats. Recognizing her sensible approach to nutrition, four years ago, Wiley Publishing commissioned Michele to write Beating Sugar Addictions for Dummies.
Every week, Michele works with major banks in Australia – Westpac, CBA, ANZ, HSBC, and corporations like Apple, Dropbox, Dexus, News.com, MFAA, Women in Focus, ACCOR, Westfield, Department of Defence, Tourism Portfolio, Heart Research Australia, Cure Cancer, and schools and education events. She is the keynote speaker for the Heads of Schools of Australia and the Positive Schools Conference in Hong Kong. Michele is also an ambassador for Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution and the launch of THAT SUGAR FILM.
Michele is the Nature Care College Ambassador, Cure Cancer Ambassador, and Heart Research Institute Ambassador and consults for 100’s on international corporations. She recently sat alongside the Dalai Lama at a conference where she presented on ‘Vitality, Energy and Serotonin – It’s all in Your Food.’ Mental health and nutrition research is her passion, and she often declares, “It makes the New Yorker come out in her.”

- Do you have training material ready for online teaching? Then, learn more about Kajabi, which is the platform I use and check if this is something you should invest in. I LOVE Kajabi and have built my entire website and learning programs using the platform. I have already converted many colleagues and coaches to using it. You can teach anything on Kajabi: music, farming, yoga... It handles everything: mailing this newsletter, CRM, payments, my website, and of course, my online teaching platform.*
- Do you want to be coached by my coach? If so, join me and many others from May to July for a 3-month program designed to help you launch a product or service in 3 months! I have done so many programs, and this one is by far the one that worked best for me. It goes through all the steps you need to take, in real-time, with all the resources, templates, and tools you need. I will be doing it again, so we can be colleagues!*
- Do you want a website? Here's my secret: Templates with everything you need: webpages, social media templates, all done for you, styled, branded, and easy to use. Yes, you can change the colors and photos.*
- Do you hate sending emails backward and forward to book a meeting? If you have been spoiled for most of your career by having excellent EAs (guilty!) and all of a sudden you find yourself managing your own calendar, you have a newfound respect for the work they used to do for you, right? Many people like Calendly, but I'm a big fan of Harmonizely. It is effortless to use, translates well to different time zones, sends reminders, asks questions, and automatically sets up a zoom meeting. It's a blessing, and I can't live without it.*

What executives can learn from watching high-performance sports (Ep 66)
Monday Jan 25, 2021
Monday Jan 25, 2021
In this episode, I’ll be sharing with you my observations of high-performance individuals. In this case, high-ranking tennis players and their teams, their coaches, family, doctors, physios – and draw learnings and ideas we can use in managing our careers and getting ready for job hunting and career progression.
I believe we can learn by observing, and not just by reading books or going to school. High-performance research studies, high-performing individuals, and teams have been topics I am interested in for over 15 years. I started paying more attention to sports performance when I wrote my Honours thesis and noticed a link in the bibliographical references in papers I was reading: management and psychology literature were referencing papers from sports and health journals.
The more I read, the more fascinated I became about using the learnings usually applied for high-performance tasks and activities such as sports, defence, and space travel. And applying it to highly stressful, endurance-type career situations we face so often. Still, we don’t realize they are indeed a) competitive and b) endurance events that require strategic planning and team support.
This episode was first aired as a Facebook Live Video during the 2020 Australian Open, held in Melbourne every January. If you have been following me, it will come as no surprise to you that I really enjoy watching tennis, and I have many times made analogies between the game of tennis and job hunting. I analyze many traits, behaviours, and strategies the players and their teams adopted, which are strongly correlated with their success or failure.
I hope you enjoy listening to this episode; lookout for another great one coming up next week!

“Our emotions, our intuitions, and our gut reactions will often lead us in the wrong direction,” said Dr. Gleb Tsipursky in my interview with him, recorded on Friday 27th of March 2020. Never have we ever in our lives, in this generation, at this point in time, wanted to know more about what to do, how to do it, and when will the threat of COVID-19 be over. All over the world, political leaders, scientists, health practitioners, businesses, and families, are struggling to find their feet and get a sense of direction amidst the threat of COVID-19. It is impacting our health and our economy like no other crisis we’ve ever seen before.
In this episode, I interview Dr. Gleb Tsipursky, a disaster avoidance expert, consultant, coach, speaker, and former academic with over 15 years of experience as a cognitive neuroscientist and behavioral economist. Gleb has written for major outlets such as Inc. Magazine, Time, Scientific American, Fast Company, and Psychology Today, and has been interviewed extensively on TV and podcasts. As CEO of Disaster Avoidance Experts, he has consulted and coached hundreds of clients worldwide, including large corporations such as IBM, Honda, and Wells Fargo. His academic career includes seven years as a professor at Ohio State University and dozens of peer-reviewed pieces published in leading academic journals. He authored the bestselling author of several books, such as “The Truth-Seeker’s Handbook,” “Never Go With Your Gut: How Pioneering Leaders Make the Best Decisions and Avoid Business Disasters.”
How did we connect, Gleb and me? When we booked our catch-up, the plan was to prepare you for redundancy and how job hunters can make the right decisions when emotions are high during a crisis or unexpected events. Little did we know we would be talking about avoiding disasters during the biggest disaster of our time.
So, what did we do? We quickly pivoted our chat and focused squarely on what is happening globally - the uncertainty and complexity of the COVID-19 pandemic, its effects on the economy, our work, or our livelihoods. Gleb helps us understand how to respond to threats effectively, make the right decisions, and prepare for things that can go wrong that we are not anticipating. At a time like this, his clients must be thinking, “how lucky are we that we’ve had Gleb on a retainer, right?!”. Yes, indeed!
And you will be pleased to know - I know I was - that many times during our conversation, I had my coaching framework validated over and over again by Gleb’s research and recommendations - that we need to think and plan long-term. We should focus and work strategically towards our goals to pragmatically develop a long term, sustainable career. I felt reassured that I’m tracking well in the support I’m providing you folks, my students, and clients. Together, we will get through this and be better positioned for the new world of work that will crystalize on the other side of this crisis. We’ve all heard this before; that crisis is both a threat and an opportunity. So we need to be ready to bypass the threats we face right now and those yet to come and use this hibernation time to prepare ourselves and update our toolkit to make the most out of the opportunities ahead.
In times of crisis, more often than not, we are overwhelmed with our emotions and base our decisions on what we feel is right. We are usually not prepared to deal with it and especially not make the right decisions that will benefit us for the long term. How can we make the right decisions, especially in times of crisis or when something unexpected happens, like COVID-19?
Here are some key takeaways from this interview:
Beware of these three cognitive biases: they are the specific errors we make because of how our brain is wired. They are the systematic patterns of making wrong decisions:
- Normalcy bias – where we feel like the future will be normal, that it will be like the past.
- Confirmation bias – where we tend to look for information that confirms our beliefs and ignore information that doesn’t.
- Optimism bias – where we tend to be way more optimistic about the future.
Ask yourself five questions to minimize risks when making important decisions:
- What important information didn’t I yet fully consider? What evidence then should I take into account?
- What dangerous judgment errors haven’t I addressed? What cognitive biases haven’t I considered?
- What would a trusted adviser tell you? What would they tell you about this situation?
- How have you addressed all the ways that this decision could fail?
- What would cause you to revise your decision? What would cause you to change your mind about whatever decision you’re making?

In 2020, we have talked about how the pandemic affects all areas of our lives, especially our work. Living and working from home, market disruption, and government interventions are now the new normal, at least until we control the outbreak and most likely up to the point where we have a wide distribution of an effective vaccine.
With that said, our world has changed. So, how is our new world of work going to look like? What challenges and opportunities will present us? In this episode, I spoke to Marianne Roux, who has over 25 years' experience as a New World of Work Strategist. Marianne helps leaders and HR executives understand how to adapt their organizations to the new world of work by training their leaders and teams and transforming their businesses. She is a regular keynote speaker, author, and business school lecturer and works pro-bono on developing women's entrepreneurial skills and alleviating poverty and trauma. Her work takes her to all corners of the Earth, including countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. She is highly regarded as an expert in her field. She is called upon to support large multinational organizations, governments, and non-profits in adjusting their business models, culture, and workforce to be more future-oriented and entrepreneurial.
Marianne helps us understand how to thrive during a crisis and how to pivot and develop our career to adjust to new working and living ways.
Key advice from Marianne to thrive under crisis - be it COVID-19 or any other you may encounter in the future:
- For a week or two, take time to get through the shock and the grief.
- Sort out an area at home to be your home office, and make it a friendly and happy place.
- Have a workday every day, give yourself a job title, continue learning, and continue to network and connect with others.
- Schedule activities in your day to help keep your spirits up, like exercising and volunteering.
- You are not on holiday: You're employing yourself into a job, and you've got to keep that mindset.
Marianne's foresight to help you plan for the next stages of your career:
- The new world of work will most definitely include all things digital: from data analytics and design thinking; there are many free courses and public content you can access, so use this opportunity to update your skills.
- If data is not your thing, focus on relationships: health care, aged care, and other sectors will require relationship management skills.
- Entrepreneurial skills are very important, especially in developing countries: use your youth and get them involved in your business idea. They understand digital and can help you build your success.
- Advice for career hunters in developed countries: There are opportunities in entrepreneurship, innovation, and how business and government work together. These are the areas that need much improvement.

Achieving financial and career goals - with Paul Burrows (Ep 63)
Monday Jan 04, 2021
Monday Jan 04, 2021
For Paul Burrows, our guest today, the goal was to become financially independent and having the ability to make choices about where and when we wanted to retire or how much he and his wife wanted to work. Paul is now financially independent, and a few years ago, he decided it was time to retire. He has been a great mentor to other professionals. He takes a keen interest in career development, so I believe he is an excellent fit for this podcast, both with his career experience and knowledge and by having the right mindset of giving back and helping others achieve their best.
Here are some key take-ways from the interview with Paul:
1 - Redundancy experience:
- Outplacement services only work to a certain point, but you need to be proactive and do the work yourself.
- Be informed about what is going on in the corporate world: Paul reads the Australian Financial Review every day. Doing so during redundancy made him strategically choose his next steps.
- Paul's goal was not to waste his redundancy: I believe he meant both the financial package and the opportunity to Reset His Career!
2 - Career Transition
- If investing in education, do so for certifications and studies that are an absolute requirement for your career transition: Paul studied to become a Financial Planner, so in his case, the training was a requirement.
- Understand the difference in status you will experience by shifting careers and sectors and being ok with it: It's a humbling experience.
- Leverage from your previous career's strengths, your original DNA, to help you springboard and move faster in your new career. Once he gained initial experience as a Financial Planner in Paul's case, his business background got him higher-paying jobs.
3 - Retirement:
- Test the waters before exiting the job market by doing contract roles and consulting.
- Understand your personal needs: If you are like Paul's wife and the social interaction and work still brings you joy, financial independence gives you a choice to also continue working, if you wish to!
4 - Financial independence**:
- Financial independence gives you a choice.
- Reward yourself by saving, not spending.
- It's never too late to start planning.
- Set financial goals.
- Understand that there will be sacrifices and that it can be tedious.
- Wealth is not income – wealth is assets.
- Paul's heroes have been professionals that, with average incomes, were able to achieve financial independence.
I hope you enjoyed this episode; lookout for another great one coming up next week!
**The information in this podcast is general and does not take into account your personal circumstances, financial needs, and objectives. Before acting on any information, you should consider if it is appropriate to you, and in particular, you should seek independent financial advice.

My career story: From immigrant to CEO (Ep 62)
Monday Dec 28, 2020
Monday Dec 28, 2020
From a very young age, I remember my favorite play game was to pretend I was working. I was the teacher, the secretary, the horse-jumping instructor! My barbies were doctors and vets, and this was before you could actually buy a “professional” Barbie! My family had great aspirations for me, and those involved me getting a job and being successful at it. I started working very young and became very independent; I never looked back. It's been great for me, and I encouraged my kids to do the same.
In this episode, you'll listen to me explain the steps my husband and I took to move to Australia and why we did it. It's great sharing my story on the podcast, as many people ask me about it: why I’ve moved to Australia, why and how I changed jobs, and how I got to where I am now.
In this Facebook Live, which we have now edited into a podcast, I focused on what I believe was my key challenges along the way: finding a career in a new country and juggling career and family.
Here are some key takeaways from what I learned along the way:
- How building relationships are important for your career and sanity!
- Planning and designing your lifestyle and budget to reach your career/life goals and passion.
- How to make the best of every opportunity, if not creating your own.
In sharing my story, I hope to inspire you and encourage you wherever you may be in your path right now.

From the moment I decided to start a podcast, Lynne Cazaly was on the top of my list of potential guests. There’s something about her leadership style, her unassuming way, and the quiet confidence that she exudes, making her the perfect guest speaker. Last year, while trying to lock her in to record this episode, she was the hardest guest to pin down: she was in such high demand as a conference speaker, she was never in Melbourne long enough for us to get together. Now with COVID and quarantine, life has changed, we zoomed in, and finally, we had our chat a few weeks ago.
Lynne’s training and speaking gigs have included working for Australia's largest organizations, like Telstra, Australia Post, nab, CBA, and the AFL. She regularly travels to New Zealand, where she has a loyal following and delivers training and keynotes. Lynne has also done keynotes, workshops, and training in Europe, the USA, and Asia.
Her latest book, “ish: The Problem with our Pursuit for Perfection and the Life-Changing Practice of Good Enough,” got a lot of media attention. Lynne was interviewed extensively on TV and in magazines. The topic of perfectionism is one that everyone can relate to, and for that reason, I was able to see my friend in many morning TV shows over many weeks!
In this interview, we have pivoted the discussion about perfectionism to focus mostly on career planning, job hunting, and the selection and recruitment process. A “perfect” resume, a “perfect” match for the key selection criteria, giving the “perfect” answer to an interview question, “the perfect” job, being the “perfect” candidate” - these are sayings we through around all the time whilst job hunting. But they impact our mindset and create an unhealthy, unhelpful, and not sustainable expectation. I hope that after listening to this episode, you will feel free from "perfectionism" and ready to embrace "good enough"!
Timestamps:
- 5:08 - Lynne’s career progression and her experience in the corporate sector of the need to be perfect
- 8:55 - Difference between going for perfect, which is impossible, versus going for complete and accurate information, which is an achievable goal
- 10:35 - Perfectionism, job hunting, and how to improvise
- 13:50 - How Lynne wrote the book using improv techniques and how this is a great example of how to treat your resume, and the concept of version control
- 22:25 - How “Perfect” is still expected: in the recruitment and selection world, and the corporate world in general: Lynne’s tips to dealing with sectors and industries where perfectionism is expected. 3 main types of Perfectionism.
- 26:30 - Me explaining the dissonance between the perfect picture put together by companies for job applicants when they go to market looking to hire versus the candidate working solo trying to meet what is most times “over the top” expectations from recruiters and hiring managers.
- 29:13 - The Pareto Principle: How job hunters can prepare themselves for the job market and not worry about not being “perfect.”
- 31:57 - Why putting more effort into something can actually get you worse results and the idea of iterative improvement of resumes

In this episode, I’ll answer the most interesting questions I received since recording the last Career Q&A episode (episode 51). Thank you to everyone who has sent me questions by messaging me on social media, emails, or asking them when I’m invited to speak or present at webinars. It’s very important to me to receive these questions and know what issues are on your mind. This way, I can address them via the Q&A episodes and develop future episodes dedicated to the most common concerns you have.
Timestamps:
- 03:11 - Salary range: I’m often asked to nominate an expected salary in online applications, and it’s a mandatory question! Any tips for answering?
- 06:47 - No promotion: I am doing my job very well, and management likes to keep me where I am. I am stuck in the same position for the last ten years. Does it look like I am missing a strategy on how to communicate with top management?
- 10:02 - Contract to permanent: I’m in a part-time contract role. My director wants my role to be permanent. It needs to be reviewed by the CEO for approval. I’m not sure how I would continue if it were refused.
- 14:54 - Moving from small to big company: What advice would you give someone who wants to move from a small company to a top tier company? It seems like the big four consulting firms only look for people who worked for the big four.
- 18:56 - Starting a new role: I recently started a new role. Should I plan for my next move now?
- 22:45 - Maternity leave: I have just returned from maternity leave and feel like I no longer enjoy my current role. What advice would you give in helping me find a new role?
- 27:00 - Help with LinkedIn and resume: Can you advise me on how to do a better resume and LinkedIn? And can I send you my resume?
- 31:12 - Job search during the holidays: What is your advice regarding the holiday season and job hunting? Is there any point in job hunting in December and early January?

In this 2-part workshop, I will provide extra detail, tips, and advice on implementing a winning formula to get a new job faster by maintaining a job search routine over the holidays. But if you are serious about your job search and need to find a new job fast, I recommend that you register. Ideally, you would want to attend the training live to ask questions and interact with me. But even if the dates and times don't suit you, registering you at least guarantees to get the recordings of the live training sessions. The two sessions are happening from 11 am to 12 pm Melbourne time (AEDT) on the 2nd and 3rd of December 2020.

In November 2019, a podcast listener contacted me to say Alistair Freeman had written a very personal account on LinkedIn about his experience being made redundant, looking for work, tapping on his network, going through recruitment and selection, and ultimately finding a new job. At the time, those real and vulnerable personal stories of redundancies were nowhere to be found. After reading his post, I messaged him and invited Alistair to expand on his experience a bit more as a guest of this podcast. That episode is number 8. Positive Redundancy: Interview with Alistair Freeman.
Since then, a lot has changed! I really enjoyed my chat with Alistair and had penciled in my calendar that it would be great to catch up with him again in 12 months. Considering Alistair made a sector change and a seachange, I am really grateful that he agreed to the second interview: these are two ideas that are very trendy at the moment with professionals impacted by the pandemic.
Once again, Alistair was a fantastic guest, really open and generous with his time and tips for other professionals going through a career transition. I hope that you enjoy the chat and that Alistair's positivity inspires you.
Alistair was fortunate to have a career coach as part of his redundancy plan. If there's anything I can do to support your career transition, please don't hesitate to contact me on rb@renatabernarde.com or book a time for a chat using this link: https://app.harmonizely.com/rb/30min.

Losing your job and being between jobs for an extended period of time can be really tough; a mental and physical roller-coaster ride. Recruitment and selection is also a challenging process to go through. For those without a coach or a strong support system, it can be very lonely. There's also the potential for lack of structure and routine - which professionals in the corporate sector are so used to - making you feel without a roadmap to follow. And finally, success is unpredictable when applying for roles. It is rare for a professional between jobs not to experience a high degree of failure before getting a new role. And failure at this level is a new experience for many professionals.
This is an important episode to listen to as we reach the tail end of an unpredictable year. If you are currently unemployed, it's time to review your plans and set new goals. You can use my program Reset Your Career to help you with that. But first, listen to this episode, and make sure you are taking care of your well-being, sleep, and keeping a positive mindset.

I invited Jacob Thomas to be a guest on the podcast so that they could help me unpack some of the many questions I have about how employers, recruiters, and coaches can better support trans, gender diverse, and nonbinary professionals. And Jacob did not disappoint. This is a much-needed discussion that I hope all my listeners will be interested in for their personal and professional development.
Some of the topics of our conversation include:
- choosing pronouns,
- employers and organizations looking for quick wins with what Jacob explains is “pink” dollar
- the recruitment of queers employees to reach diversity markers
- issues with dress codes
- conscious and unconscious bias
- Jacob’s experience in changing their gender marker with their employer
- and much more.
Jacob and I are friends, so the first 12 minutes is a bit of banter, where at least twice, I cried with laughter. If you want to check out the video interview, please go to my YouTube channel, where many of the podcasts are also available in video format.
About our guest, Jacob Thomas:
Jacob Thomas is one of Australia’s most prominent leaders in sexual orientation and gender identity. A nonbinary person living in Melbourne, Jacob uses the pronouns they/them and works at the Monash Warwick Alliance as their Education Project Coordinator, where they also guest lecture in Global Studies.
In 2016 Jacob received the Queen's Young Leader Award, recognizing Jacob’s work on suicide prevention for Australia’s LGBTIQ community. Jacob previously sat as the Coordinator of the Commonwealth Youth Gender and Equality Network (CYGEN) and represented the network at international levels such as the 61st session of UN Women’s Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) and the ECOSOC Youth Forum in New York, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, the 11th Commonwealth Youth Forum in London, and at AIDS2018 in Amsterdam.
Jacob advises public, private, and non-profit organizations on issues related to the LGBTIQ community, diversity and inclusion policies, and queer-friendly work environments. They are a mentor to many queer, allies, and senior leaders in Melbourne and internationally.
A greater speaker and facilitator, Jacob, has presented a TEDx Talk at QUT on the ideas around gender identity, is a contributor to Archer Magazine and Star Observer, and has written a personal essay for BuzzFeed about their experience coming out as nonbinary.
Jacob is interested in queer perspectives in intercultural learning, feminist methodologies, and youth leadership. They are currently undertaking their Masters in International Development at RMIT. In their spare time, Jacob is a performer, designer, and sometimes a drag artist.

About the Reset Your Career program:
We can all agree that 2020 has been a complicated year, and maybe you and other professionals like you at some point have lost track of your career goals, your focus, and your ambitions. Most importantly, lockdown, working from home, and unemployment have left many of us disconnected from what employers are now searching for in their new hires.
Reset Your Career is a program to kickstart our engines and put you back on track. It was designed by yours truly (yes, that's me, Renata Bernarde, the host of this podcast, career coach, and job hunting expert) to launch or reset your job hunting with a series of masterclasses and a 31-day action plan. It is perfect for professionals and executives in-between jobs in 2020 and hoping to find work in the corporate, public, and nonprofit sectors.
In a hybrid program that mixes self-guided content and live Zoom gatherings, I will personally take you through the step-by-step of how to reset your career and start getting your job search plans into gear.
The Slade Group Team will be collaborating during the workshop, with Geoff Slade giving the welcome address and recruiters from Slade presenting one of the sessions (A Recruiters' Panel).

Episode Show Notes
Susan Colantuono's TED Talk "The career advice you probably didn't get" has over 4 million views and has recently been included as one of the top 10 TEDTalks for career moves by The Enterprise Project. TED has also included it in a special playlist for women's career development. It has been a favorite of mine for years, and I often recommend it to my coaching clients. So it was a huge honor to have Susan as my guest for this episode, which we recorded live in August 2020 during the 2020 Digital Innovation Forum, organized by the Department of Jobs, Precinct, and Regions of the State of Victoria.
I was so grateful that, in preparation for the recording this episode, I had the opportunity to read her book, No Ceiling, No Walls, which I now recommend to my clients as well.
This episode is dedicated to a better understanding of the relationship between leadership skills and career progression. Susan and I go through a lot of interesting discussions about leadership and its link to career development and advancement. This synergy and connection are so important for my ambitious clients: those who not only want to look for a new job opportunity but also want that opportunity to stretch their skills and experience further.

This episode was recorded LIVE during the 2020 Digital Innovation Forum (#DIF2020), organized by the Department of Job, Precincts, and Regions, State of Victoria, Australia. When the opportunity arose, I immediately thought of Catherine Ball as a perfect guest for this partnership between The Job Hunting Podcast and #DIF2020. She's full of energy and generous in sharing her ideas, knowledge, and advice. There was very little prompting needed from me!
Catherine is one of the most prolific, efficient professionals and entrepreneurs I know. She also blends entrepreneurialism, academia, and corporate life seamlessly, at least from the outside. I am sure there's a great deal of hard work going on to keep all her engines going; she gives us a little bit of insight into how she manages it all.
This episode is one to be enjoyed and listened to a couple of times. It's also full of optimism and hope for an amazing future of work.
Catherine is currently promoting a masterclass on Influence and Leadership, which if you are lucky you may be able to access for free using this link below - if not it's still pretty cheap, so I recommend you invest it in if you are interested in managing a portfolio career or starting your own business consulting on the side: Click here for details.

Alex Naoumidis is the CEO of Mindset Health, a startup he founded with his brother Chris in Melbourne Australia. It now has 2 apps on the market: Mindset (for mental health) and Nerva (for irritable bowel syndrome, which is often triggered by stress and anxiety), but its ambitions are much higher.
Mindset Health is a company brand with the vision of managing multiple products addressing chronic conditions with app-based hypnotherapy. Since it’s inception in 2018, Mindset has been building a loyal following of fans, like yours truly, has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Tech Crunch, and other news outlets, interested in their digital health innovation and hypnotherapy programs. It has also attracted the interest of investors: In May this year, the startup announced it had raised $1.1 million in funding from investors across the U.S. and Australia.
The first half of our conversation was about the startup world: how Alex landed in the world of innovation and entrepreneurialism, about working in startups and building a team of diverse professionals. Then we focused on wellbeing in 2020, what/how and if COVID has influenced Mindset’s next steps and growth, and what Alex can tell us to help us perform at our best during the lockdown.
This episode was the first-ever episode of The Job Hunting Podcast recorded LIVE with an audience. It was one of four special episodes designed to be part of the Victorian 2020 Digital Innovation Festival, or #DIF2020. DIF is an initiative of the Department of Jobs, Precincts, and Regions. In Melbourne, we are very proud of our innovation precincts, especially when it comes to health innovation. And Mindset is on a league of its own.

LinkedIn Q&A from The Job Hunting Podcast (Ep 46)
Monday Sep 07, 2020
Monday Sep 07, 2020
In August 2020, I delivered a presentation for over 100 senior executives on how to use LinkedIn more efficiently. The goal was to give these busy corporate leaders, a set of ideas and tools so that they can spend a minimal amount of time on the platform, and still have a LinkedIn presence that's punchy and interesting. So if that is you - that is if you also want to have that visibility, but you don't want, or don't have the time, to spend a lot of time on LinkedIn - Then this podcast episode is for you.
The idea is to maximize opportunities and visibility: your LinkedIn profile and activity should position you as you want to be perceived professionally in the job market. This should be the ultimate goal.
The organizers received more questions that day then we had the time to answer. So I'm using this podcast episode to address all the questions that we received, and answer them to the best of my ability, considering I'm not a big fan of "one size fits all approach" and believe we should all be looking at finding what is distinctive about our capabilities and skills, and not copy what everyone else is doing on LinkedIn.
If you are fairly new to LinkedIn, I would recommend that you start our LinkedIn journey together by first listening to The Job Hunting Podcast Episode No. 34: How to make your LinkedIn profile stand out in 2020. Then come back to this episode and listen to the LinkedIn Q&A. However, if you are familiar with LinkedIn and an active user of the platform, you can go ahead and listen to the Q&A, no problem!
I also recommend that you download my LinkedIn Checklist: it will help you get started on LinkedIn or do a quick review on your profile.
I'd also love to hear your feedback and opinions. As I mentioned above, I'm not a big fan of the 'one size fits all approach to LinkedIn", so I'd love to hear what has been working for you on LinkedIn. When I'm doing LinkedIn Audits or working one-on-one with my coaching clients I can tailor my recommendations to suit their needs. I love doing this, it's really exciting to position professionals for success. And I see it works for them!
And if you are listening to this episode a few months down the track, it's likely I few things may have changed on the platform. So keep that in mind, be smart, and adapt to make sure you are on top of the new trends and tools on LinkedIn. If you want my advice ongoing, join my The Job Hunting Podcast Private Group on Facebook and ask me a question in there. That's where I hang out the most and do my Live Coaching Sessions regularly.
LinkedIn Questions Answered: Timestamps to guide your listening:
- 8:55 - Do you recommend posting your mobile on your profile as I am now finding that I am being contacted by sales teams flogging?
- 12:15 - I am using LinkedIn to re-brand and promote my consultancy side-gig. I am publishing original content, sharing relevant content, and commenting on areas of interest. Is this to be discouraged?

- 22:19 - What are the main sections you should use keywords to describe yourself for the LinkedIn algorithm?
- 26:02 - LinkedIn has introduced an open-work banner recently - do you think this is advantageous to use or does it have downsides? If one does not wish to use the big green frame around one's face to show open to work that LinkedIn introduced recently, is it ok to show OPEN TO OPPORTUNITIES at the beginning of one's “About” section?

- 46:11 - Do you have any guide on how long you should retain links on our profile? How regularly would you recommend ‘refreshing’ with more current links?
- 47:20 - I don’t understand the “Search Appearances” function on LI. It lists a number (eg., 500) but when you click in, only four companies are listed. Why aren’t all the companies listed?

Following the COVID outbreak, the necessary reforms to workplace occupational health and safety as well as our experiences working remotely will most certainly shape how we use the office space in the future. How do you imagine things are going to change?
In this episode of The Job Hunting Podcast, we have a very special guest to address this and many questions I had in relation to workplaces, office space, the dynamics of working from home versus working in an office, and how to be productive in both. Her name is Su Lim. I interviewed her a few weeks ago just as we were starting stage four of lockdown here in Melbourne.
Su is a workplace strategist and organizational coach. Selfishly, I wanted to get her insight into why is it so good to work from home for certain things, on the other hand, why is it so hard for me to get other projects going?!
This was an episode I was really looking forward to recording. I have been a client of Su's business, and I know how wonderful it can be to have experts helping design great workplaces for collaboration, concentration, productivity, and creativity. I hope you enjoy this chat as well!

- 15:29 – The power of the physical space.
- 19:29 – What are the trends and expectations once we go back to the office.

- 32:57 – Can we go back to the workplaces that we have, as they are designed, right now?
- 34:53 – What are the things to look out for and raise your concerns if you are concerned about your workplace?
- 36:52 – Tips and ideas for people working from home and finding it hard to be productive.

Nicolas Georges has led several organizations, small and large, through major transformational change. Today, this is his task at Koko Black chocolates: to unlock its international potential, as he has done previously at Vitasoy Australia and as part of the Bakers Delight team. Little did he know that his first year at Koko Black would be marked by a health pandemic and business lockdown, testing his leadership and that of many other CEOs around the globe.
But Nic is first and foremost an innovator and a system thinker, connecting dots, people, and capabilities for unexpected results and possibilities. Uniquely experienced across all functions - manufacturing to sales, marketing, strategy, and R&D - in FMCG and Retail, including general management and P&L responsibility in both industries, he focuses on expressing people’s potential and creating new paths.
Koko Black is not Nic's first foray into the chocolate business. He started his career in Europe at Nestle - where he worked for 15 years - and also worked for Kraft Foods in Australia - where he helped spearhead the multinational company to become one of the most innovative food manufacturers in the country. Then at Mondelez International, he was the Research Development and Quality Director for the US$1.7billion Asia Pacific Chocolate category, after performing the same role for the AUD$2billion Australia New Zealand business across all its categories.
Not so long ago, Nicolas Georges joined Monash University and headed one of the largest and most successful food R&D teams in Asia which counted over 100 food innovators. And that is how we first met. At the time I was also working at Monash, and we had a few projects in common. He remains an adjunct professor in Chemical Engineering.
This episode is about what it says on the tin: Leadership in times of COVID. The title is a play of words with the novel Love in the Time of Cholera, by Colombian Nobel prize-winning author Gabriel García Márquez: a sentimental story about the enduring power of true love, and the fact that society in the story believes that Fermina and Juvenal Urbino are perfectly happy in their marriage, while the reality of the situation is not so ideal. Well, recently Nic wrote an open letter to CEOs in LinkedIn, and it was clear that he loves what he does and believe in the power of leadership. It is also clear that we sometimes romanticize what being a leader actually means. The reality of being a CEO is not so ideal.
His recent open letter to CEOs reminded me of The Man in the Arena speech from US President Theodore Roosevelt: "it is not the critic who counts..the credit belongs to the man in the arena". You have to listen to this episode, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Who would have thought that 2020 would be the year of data charts? That we would be glued to the daily news like never before, anxiously waiting to see more and more charts, expecting data analysts to tell us which way curves, bars, and pie charts are progressing? Be it for the number of patients with COVID-19, unemployment numbers, political and consumer sentiment, stock markets... this year has been filled with data analysis, and we are all paying close attention.
Have you ever wondered what a data professional job looks like? Why did Forbes report that data jobs are the sexiest jobs in the 21st century? And how can non-data professionals either upskill, re-skill, or learn to collaborate with data professionals?
If you are interested to find out more, you are in luck! My guest for this week's episode is a data strategist and machine learning expert. Catherine Lopes is the Head of Data Strategy and Analytics at ME Bank in Australia and the co-founder of three startups. A business-focused data scientist and passionate educator, Catherine helps organizations increase their business performance by applying advanced analytics and improving enterprise data management. She has worked internationally across a wide range of sectors with specialties in machine learning and analytics transformation.
Listen to our discussion to gain insight into the world of data science, artificial intelligence, and ethics. Learn how you can get started in data professions, data projects, or work alongside data scientists. You'll have a rare opportunity to learn from a data expert who is also passionate about her profession and in helping other data scientists thrive.
Remember you can always reach out to me if it’s time to start investing in your career progression. Check my website - there’s a link below - and find out more about my services, as well as free resources I have created just for you.

With ongoing lockdowns and health concerns, the trend of working from home seems to be here to stay. And with that, many professionals in Australia, and indeed all around the world, are thinking of moving away from big cities, to the countryside. But are we over-romanticizing the prospect of moving, or is it a possibility that we can now seriously consider?
In this episode of The Job Hunting Podcast, I interviewed Liz Ritchie, the CEO of the Regional Australia Institute. For almost 20 years, Liz has worked across the corporate, government, and not-for-profit sectors, and we crossed paths when we both worked at Australia's renowned think tank CEDA (The Committee for Economic Development of Australia). Liz is a change agent, a marketer, and a great researcher, so I'm not at all surprised with the high quality reports the Regional Australia Institute is producing this year, which is aligned with Australians' sentiment: Should we be moving back to the country? If we are working remotely, why are we living in big cities, if we could be down at the coast, or in the mountains? Many of my friends are asking themselves that, and in social media, I see this trend is global. Marketing and innovation guru Tom Goodwin poked fun of the notion of moving away from New York on Twitter back in March, only to find himself buying a piece of land in an idyllic location in Georgia in July. Liz is an extremely passionate advocate for regional Australia, and I couldn't think of a better guest to discuss this important topic for job hunters and those who are planning the next steps in their career. Especially towards the end of our chat, we discuss many interesting statistics that I think will come to you as a surprise.
Prior to joining the RAI, Liz was the Regional General Manager for Westpac Commercial Bank, the State Director for CEDA, in Western Australia, and held a range of leadership roles with CEDA since 2008. In October 2018, Liz was appointed by The Hon David Littleproud MP, then Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources, as a non-government independent member of the Indonesian – Australia partnership on Food Security in the Red Meat and Cattle Sector (Partnership). She is also the founding Director of the Australian Gender Equality Council (AGEC) and remains a National Ambassador. In 2015, Liz was a Business News 40 Under 40 Winner in WA, recognized for her contribution to business and the community. She is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, holds a Master of Applied Science (Organisational Dynamics) and a Bachelor of Public Relations form the RMIT.
Timestamps to guide your listening:
- 6:43 – chat about interests and how people in Australia are thinking of moving to the country
- 13:34 – Liz’s career story and background
- 26:51 – talks about affordability and over-all health advantage of country living
- 30:04 - Can people now start moving to country and not regret it?
- 36:55 – Is this a trend in other countries as well?
- 44:23 - Is there always an appetite from the local communities to welcome people coming in?
- 47:47 – Migrants and Regional Australia
- 54:32 – Employment availability in Regional Australia
I hope your questions have been answered in this interview. If not, feel free to comment or message me and I will gladly answer your queries. I'm planning to do another episode soon about moving to the country, as this seems to be a popular topic with requests.

My guest, friend, and mentor, Geoff Morgan AM, is not only one of the most successful HR businessmen of our generation, but also a great entrepreneur, author, and philanthropist. His life and career are so aligned with understanding the developments of recruitment and selection globally, and his businesses have always been at the forefront of change in the sector. So of course I thought a chat with Geoff at this time would be invaluable for you, the podcast listeners.
Geoff fulfilled his childhood dream of living in the Australian Bush when he became a wool classer following his completion of Rural Studies. After five years of working in the country, Geoff spent several years in the shipping industry. Geoff traveled overseas on a working holiday and secured a job in the recruitment industry in London. The experience in London has been a great source of reference for the rest of his career in the recruitment industry.
Geoff’s great love has always been working with and learning from people. His other great passions include Australian Indigenous Affairs, motor racing, cycling, travel, and most importantly his family.
Geoff was a co-founder of Morgan & Banks in 1985 and grew the company to become a dominant global recruitment force. Morgan & Banks was publicly listed in 1995 and sales grew to over $700 million prior to its acquisition by TMP/Monster.com in 1999. Talent2 was then established in 2003 and grown to be a global business that was acquired by Allegis Group – the largest private talent management firm in the world.
People are a passion for Geoff and for over 35 years he has immersed himself in the work environment and employment industry globally and has helped many thousands of people with their careers and lives. Geoff has also been a great mentor to many people, particularly in the Indigenous Community, and more latterly around the areas of refugees and asylum seekers.
Geoff sits on several Boards including McTavish Surf International Pty Ltd, The World Scout Foundation, and The World Scout Committee and is the immediate past Chairman of LiveHire Ltd, an HR Tech public company.
Geoff has co-authored four books on recruiting and interestingly authored a cookbook of family favorite recipes. In 2004 Geoff was the recipient of the Ernst & Young “Master Entrepreneur of the Year” Award given for sustained success in business. Geoff became a Member of the Order of Australia in the 2015 Queen’s Birthday Honours in recognition of his service to the Scouting Movement and to the community through executive roles in business, Indigenous education, and sporting organizations.
There have been significant changes in recruitment and selection in this time of COVID pandemic. With extensive and significant layoffs, sectors under stress, and tectonic shifts in the job market, hearing from someone with such foresight and experience is a great opportunity. And to boot, Geoff is, as always, full of enthusiasm, positivity, and energy.
Timestamps to guide your listening:
- 06:54 - It's a family affair: How Geoff got into the recruitment business.
- 12:40 - Geoff was ahead of the game: fighting for diversity and inclusion since 1976.

- 25:22 - How remote work and working from home arrangements will affect recruitment and selection?
- 27:48 - Geoff's a tech HR wizard but he's not that keen on tech.
- 34:10 - Is there anyone still doing a reference check?
- 37:20 - Thoughts on the future of employment.
- 42:34 - Geoff's personal goals: what helped him succeed in business.
